Under STCW, all Officers in charge of a Navigational Watch on vessels more
than 200 gross tons must demonstrate competence to "transmit and receive information
by visual signaling" (Blinking Light). For licenses
not more than 1600 gross ton this is a one time requirement.
There are 3 "celestial" problems on the Master 1600 Near Coastal exam. 271
questions have been added to the Navigational Problems module. They are an azimuth
(any body), an amplitude (any body) and a time zone time calculation (sunrise/sunset).
The "celestial" problems questions apply to the near coastal license, inland
applicants can skip these questions.
Under STCW code, there is no distinction between licenses over 500 ITC. The
celestial requirements are now the same for Master 1600 near coastal as they
are for an unlimited license. Our Celestial Navigation CD
CD provides complete help with celestial navigation questions for all license
grades.
