Freelance Software has evolved from public access of the USCG questions (September, 1988) and the personal computer. Our maritime training software has come a long way. Input from users continue to improve our products. We are currently concentrating on providing help for the massive National Maritime Center databank of questions. Our most recent completed help system Rules of the Road provides help for all the rules questions. Our next project is the electricity questions on the engineer CD's.
Lots of sites offer US Coast Guard license software for Merchant Marine exam training. Most of the license software available contains ALL the questions (over 17,000 for deck) from the USCG data bank. These questions are available for free download from the Coast Guard site (link below). If you're sitting for 1600 GT Near Coast why would you want to study Master Unlimited questions.
Our Merchant Marine testing software programs contain only genuine United States Coast Guard questions painstakingly selected for your license grade. All CD's contain a library of reference material, and publications needed to answer the questions. Question and help file updates are downloaded and installed by use of an update utility. The update utility works like your virus protection software.

Testing Applications for the Merchant Mariner
Our unlimited applications, Master-3rd Mate, and Chief -3rd Assistant Engineer contain all the USCG exam questions as the exam subjects require. All other training CD's are license specific and contain selected questions for the license grade stated. Questions are selected randomly or returned from a text or drawing number. Correctly answered questions are not repeated (unless reset). This feature provides fresh questions, while tracking your total progress. For more details please see test help or download the demo.
Demo's are restricted only by the number of questions 50 per / section. Demos are free to download from the links near the bottom of this page. The demos provide a good overview of the applications, however the engineer demo is an older version and does not provide search capabilities.
All CD's include a reference library. Illustrations are provided on screen, and can be printed for use with the print test option. For a listing of reference books included check the CD listings below. The latest update for our deck training CDs consists of a complete Rules of the Road help file. The help file is integrated into the application (context-sensitive). Help is provided for all Rules of the Road questions. Pressing the F1 key or the 'Need Help' button e opens the help file to the page explaining to the question.
All software offered is windows based and will run on all windows operating systems, sorry no Macintosh support.
I recently attended the Second Annual Towing Industry Forum at the State University of New York, Maritime College. A presentation by James D. Cavo of the National Maritime Center, on towing licensing was very informative. Changes include 500 course hours for licenses over 200 GRT (500 GT International), and the introduction of a new Master of Towing Vessel license.

Apprentice Mate (Steersman) is the entry level for a Masters of Towing Vessels license. Deck hands with 18 months experience qualify to sit for this exam.
The Towing Vessels license is unique, as the applicant is tested only once. You test for the Apprentice Mates exam, and move up to Master by on the job assessments, and time in grade. For details on license structure visit Apprentice Mate (Steersman) Towing.
